"There's no doubt that the quality in our squad isn't big enough to cope with missing two big players like Coutinho and Sturridge."
Whether it was meant as a subtle message to Liverpool's board or not, Brendan Rodgers was very frank about the depth of his squad.
The Reds suffered a setback this weekend as they lost 3 - 1 at Hull City, with Daniel Sturridge ruled out for up to two months with ankle ligament damage.
The result was certainly a reality check for the Reds after a strong start to the season.
To analyse the depth of Liverpool's squad, we spoke to Tony Barrett of The Times and he thinks Rodgers is right to question the strength of the supporting cast at Anfield.
"Even when Liverpool have played well and got good results, you look at what's behind the first team and you think that the minute that they do get injuries, you'll see problems coming. That's what happened at Hull City. It's so predictable," said Barrett.
"Liverpool do not have the players at their disposal. They have a good first team - not a great one but a good one - but beyond that there are some that shouldn't be at Liverpool, some who are sub-standard and some who are low on confidence. There is much more strength in depth at other clubs in the Top 5 or 6."
Barrett also queried the work done in the summer window when eight players were brought in including Victor Moses, Iago Aspas and a clutch of defenders. He also felt that they needed to sign players capable of making an instant impact instead of focusing on the likes of Tiago Ilori. For Barrett, goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is the only summer signing who has made an immediate impact.
"Liverpool signed eight players in the summer at a cost of £50 million. This was a summer when they were strengthening and doing what was necessary to get in the Top 4. They didn't sign players to make that possible. How far can Suarez and Sturridge carry them? I don't think they have the squad for the Top 4. If you're asking Victor Moses to come in for Daniel Sturridge, you can't compete for the Top 4."
Barrett feels Liverpool must address the below-par midfield in January, although he also expects the Reds to make a move for Barcelona full-back Martin Montoya because of Glen Johnson's alarming drop off in form.
