Liverpool have opened talks with a view to signing Barcelona's versatile full back Martin Montoya in January.

The 22-year-old understudy to Daniel Alves is out of contract next summer, although he has indicated that he hopes to sign a contract extension with Barca.

But Liverpool hope to engineer a permanent transfer for the Spain U21 international when the winter window opens.

The Reds' managing director met Barcelona officials yesterday to discuss a fee. Montoya is believed to be valued at €5 million.

Ireland international target Jon Flanagan would be allowed to leave on loan if a deal is agreed for his Catalan counterpart.
