Phil Mickelson will meet Pinehurst No. 2 once again on Thursday for the 214th U.S. Open and tells fans that this is his year to win it. After finishing second a record six times, we look back at those six years.
1999 PINEHURST No 2
Mickelson was a bit distracted with the fact that his wife was due to give birth at any moment during the Championships. Mickelson lost to Payne Stewart in North Carolina where he led with three to play but Stewart prevailed in the end.
2002 BETHPAGE BLACK
Mickelson had been the favorite that year in New York but even though he won the crowds' hearts, he did not win the trophy. Mickelson lost to Tiger Woods on just three under.
2004 SHINNECOCK HILLS
In 2004, Mickelson choked on the 17th hole and lost with a double-bogey five. His opponent Retief Goosen birdied the 15th and 16th holes before Mickelson crushed his chances.
2006 WINGED FOOT
In 2006 Mickelson really blew his chances to win when he flanked his final drive so far right that it bounced off of a building and landed in the rough. Australian Geoff Ogilvy won that Sunday and Mickelson was runner up once again.
2009 BETHPAGE BLACK
Surrounded by his admirers once again at Bethpage Black, Mickelson tied for second against his opponent Lucas Glover. That day, however, thoughts were with his wife who had just finished chemotherapy due to breast cancer.
2013 MERION
Mickelson was tied for the lead with Charl Schwartzel going into the final round and it looked like it would come down to the final hole to decide the winner. Justin Rose lingered a bit behind the two legends and when Mickelson came out of the 13th hole with a bogey Justin found his chance to step into the spotlight.
