Lewis Hamilton has won the US Grand Prix in Austin to keep the 2016 Formula 1 title race alive.

The 50th Grand Prix victory of his career is vital when it comes to closing the gap on Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg.

The gap has been cut down to 26 points with three races to go in Mexico, Brazil and Abu Dhabi between now and the end of November.

Rosberg finished second to limit any damage to his own title hopes.

Hamilton started pole and held the lead into the first corner in a relatively comfortable race from his perspective.

Rosberg meanwhile was overtaken by Daniel Ricciardo at the start to slip back to third.

However, Rosberg was able to reclaim that place to take home 18 points.

As Ricciardo took the final podium place for Red Bull, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished fourth while McLaren's Fernando Alonso was fifth.
