When Wayne Rooney volleyed home from 58 yards at Upton Park yesterday evening the TV pictures soon cut to David Beckham, sat in the stands, admiring and applauding the incredible goal. Instantly there were comparisons between Rooney’s goal in east London and the strike that announced Beckham’s arrival as a football superstar, scored 18 years prior in Selhurst Park.

It seems that whenever there is a great goal, one that stands out even from the 30 yard screamers and mazy dribbles through a sea of defenders, we look to compare it with the other great goals, and Rooney’s is and will be no different.

Kevin Kilbane is commentating on today’s Premier League tie between Spurs and Southampton and before kickoff he spoke with Joe Molloy about Rooney’s goal, and why he still ranks Pajtim Kasami’s strike for Fulham, against Crystal Palace, as the best strike of the season.

Kilbane played with Rooney at Everton, when the striker was just a teenager breaking onto the English football scene with devastating impact. Before the two met, Kilbane says he had heard of the young Liverpudlian teenager, and there were already whispers in English football of “this young superstar they’re developing in Everton’s academy.”

“He broke into Everton’s first team just before I arrived there,” Kilbane said.

“He was so competitive, every single day.

“He was a 16, 17 year old boy and yet he was shouting and screaming at old pros around him.”

Listen below to Kilbane’s verdict on Rooney’s goal, why Kasami’s is better, and his memories of the young Rooney.
