Monaghan's Keiran Hughes joined the Saturday panel on Off the Ball to look back at Monaghan's 2017 championship campaign.

The Ulstermen eventually lost to All-Ireland Champions Dublin in this year's quarter-finals by 1-19 to 0-12 and speaking to Ger Gilroy about the aftermath of the defeat, he said: "It was a tough week to be honest - it only probably settled in on the Thursday what really happened. I suppose after you lose a championship game the only thing to do is go and take a binge of stuff and that's what the whole lot of us did.

"It took the couple of days to realise how much we under-performed. It was gut-wrenching but every team has to drop out at some stage. We just take it on the chin and we'll move on about our business. Again it was very, very difficult to get a hold of not performing as we should have. We would have fancied ourselves to put it up to them a bit better."

Dublin dominated from the off and the game was no longer a contest after half-time. "That wasn't the plan at all," said Hughes, adding: "We were hoping to stay in it for 45/50 minutes and then spring a bench which has been very good for us during the back door.

"It's hard to put a finger on it but the Dubs are on a different level and it's tough to admit that but nine-out-of-ten times they're probably going to beat you but you're hoping for that one time that you might get on top of them.

"But, after 20/25 minutes and with Dean Rock shooting the way he was - we were giving away too many silly frees and, you know, game-over at half-time realistically.

Galway's Michael Meehan and Meath's Mickey Burke also joined the panel and the full podcast can be heard here:
