The film, which officially opened the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, has received a poor response from critics as well as the Monaco royal family.
The film is a biopic of the movie-star-turned-princess Grace Kelly, who left Hollywood and acting to marry Prince Rainier of Monaco.
Laughter was heard during a press screening on Wednesday and some of initial responses to the film have called it 'wooden', 'stiff' and 'boring' with one adding 'it’s a costume drama without much drama.'
Grace of Monaco will open in Irish cinemas on June 6.
The family have labelled the film a 'farce' and have complained it bears no relation to reality.
In response to this Kidman said: “I mean, obviously, I feel sad, because I think the film has no malice toward the family, particularly toward Grace or [Prince] Rainier."
“It’s a fictionalization. You take dramatic license.”
