Arsene Wenger has claimed that Germany and Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira was never in the frame to join Arsenal this summer.

The Gunners were linked with the World Cup and Champions League winner over the past few months, but Arsenal's manager ruled out a move for the 27-year-old and suggested that a transfer was always a non-runner:

Wenger has also confirmed that Manchester United have lodged a bid for their captain Thomas Vermaelen.

The defender, who has endured limited game-time since Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny forged a strong partnership at the heart of Arsenal's back four, is also being linked with Barcelona.
