Ken Doherty is a snooker player who won the world championship in 1997.

He grew up in Ranelagh in south Dublin, with his parents, Tony and Rose, and his siblings, Seamus, Anthony and Rosemary.

Ken’s interest in snooker began at young age, and he started playing the game at a local club called Jason’s. It was there he bought the cue that he still plays with today.

Before his death when Ken was 13, his dad showed him some of the legends of the game in action, and Ken was fascinated watching players like Alex Higgins on television.

Ken is the only player to win both the amateur and professional world snooker championships. He’s appeared in the professional final three times, and was the world snooker champion in 1997. The man he beat had won the previous five championships in a row: Stephen Hendry.

Ken married his wife Sarah in December 2001, and they live in Rathgar in Dublin with their six-year-old son, Christian.

And these are Ken Doherty’s Musical Heirlooms…

Ken's song choices were:

  • Oasis - Wonderwall
  • U2 - All I Want Is You
