Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham beat Chelsea 5-3 in a thrilling New Year's Day clash at White Hart Lane.

The result lifts Spurs above Arsenal into fifth, while Chelsea remain level on points and goal difference at the top with Manchester City.

Diego Costa gave the Blues an early lead with a tap in, but Kane's first goal of the night on the half hour mark brought Tottenham level.

Mauricio Pochettino's side would then score twice before half-time to build a healthy lead.

Danny Rose rebounded a shot that came off the post to make it 2-1 on 44 minutes, before Andros Townsend added a penalty following a foul on Kane by Gary Cahill.

With Chelsea chasing the game, Kane then stretched Spurs' advantage when he turned and fired in.

Eden Hazard raced into the box to pull one back for the Blues on 60 minutes.

But Nacer Chadli calmed Tottenham nerves with a goal 12 minutes from time.

Chelsea skipper John Terry tapped in a third goal in four festive games but it was merely a consolation as Pochettino enjoyed a first win over opposite number Jose Mourinho.
