Joseph O'Brien's 'Rekindling' claimed victory in the Melbourne Cup this morning.

'Johannes Vermeer' trained by his Dad Aiden O'Brien was in second.

Another Irish horse, 'Max Dynamite', the runner up from two years ago, was third for trainer Willie Mullins.

24-year-old O'Brien is now $3.6 million richer, and admits he didn't travel with high hopes of winning the race:

"I always wanted to train horses, even when I started riding."

"It's really unbelievable to see three Irish horses go 1-2-3. Everyone who has a horse in training in Australia only wants to win one race."

"It hasn't really sunk in yet, I can't put it into words. Rekindling has had a good year back in Ireland."
