Manchester United were not impressive but still managed to eke out a 1 - 0 win at home to Shakhtar Donetsk to secure top spot in their Champions League group.

Phil Jones started in midfield and popped up with the winning goal.

But ESPN and Irish Examiner writer Miguel Delaney does not think that the young Englishman is the answer in midfield.

"Cleverly hasn't had a good last two years but he was one of the better players on the pitch tonight. He did impose a little bit of shape in midfield which has been United's biggest issue this season. But the midfield remains a larger issue.

"I think Jones would work in a three-man midfield but in terms of controlling a game, he's not the answer. United badly need to buy a midfielder. I know Moyes is a fan of Ander Herrera but United may be reluctant to pay what is required to get him. But it's evident that he wants a midfielder like that."

Delaney thinks the result will help to settle United and felt their recent poor form dates from the concession of a late goal against Cardiff City which cost them a 2 - 1 win.
