Jonathan Woodgate has re-joined former club Middlesbrough as a first team coach.
The defender played for hometown Boro in two different spells, retiring after helping them to promotion to the Premier League last May.
He is the third addition to head coach Steve Agnew's staff, after the appointments of Joe Jordan and Paul Jenkins.
The 37 year old had recently joined Liverpool as a scout, focusing on the European continent, particularly Spain where he had spent a couple of seasons as a player.
“Jonathan is someone who we know very well, and who in turn knows this club inside and out," said Agnew to the Middlesbrough club website.
“He brings a wealth of experience from the highest level of the game, and he’s a fantastic character. We’re delighted to have him on board.”
Woodgate started his career at Leeds United, before joining Newcastle United in 2003.
The eight time England cap then spent three seasons at Real Madrid, including a season on loan at Middlesbrough.
He then signed permanently for the club in 2007 for a season, before Tottenham Hotspur brought him to White Hart Lane for three seasons.
After a brief period at Stoke City, Woodgate spent the last four seasons of his career at Middlesbrough until his retirement in 2016.
