"Carrick is probably their best midfielder and that's not saying that much."
These are bad times for Manchester United and David Moyes, but the only thing in a worse state than the mood at Old Trafford is the midfield according to Johnny Giles.
The Ireland legend was speaking to Ger on Thursday Night Football and is in no doubt that options like Phil Jones, Tom Cleverly and Marouane Fellaini are not what the doctor really ordered for Man United in the middle of the park.
"The only player they got in was Fellaini. I think he's a better player than he's looking at the moment but he was never going to be the influence that Fabregas would have had. Now there's talk about them going for [Wesley] Sneijder. They definitely need a midfield general. They're definitely lacking in the middle of the field and they have to get somebody," said Johnny.
As for Roberto Martinez, who is the toast of the town on the blue side of Merseyside after his Everton side beat United at Old Trafford last night, Giles was more cautious about apportioning praise.
He pointed that summer business aside Martinez is building on the squad constructed by David Moyes.
Other points touched on by Johnny were the "sensitive" Andre Villas Boas and Luis Suarez' stunning form.
