It's one of those dreams that became reality!

And it was one that came true for John Singleton, a factory worker who qualified for the 2014 British Open on his very first try. The 30-year-old lives just 10 minutes down the road from Hoylake and had always dreamed of playing in the Open.

Singleton's real job is at a resin factory not far from Royal Liverpool where he mixes the resin and drives a forklift.
After Singleton gets off work, he usually heads to a local golf course to practice for several more hours.

"I want to get a sponsor so I can continue to play golf," he said, knowing he would likely need to make the cut for that to happen. "I have to work full time. I want to play full time."

After missing out in regional qualifying by a single shot, Singleton made it as an alternate when another player dropped out. He took advantage of the second chance to qualify and claimed the last spot after winning a sudden-death playoff.

Singleton made a splash in the opening round today as he fired his first tee shot right down the middle of the fairway. The crowd stood up and went crazy for the Englishman as he made par on the first hole.

The rest of the day did not go to plan but he still ended the day with a 6-over 78.
