John Giles does not believe Liverpool remain a top attraction for top players - or even promising ones.

The club are struggling to keep hold of Raheem Sterling and John told Off The Ball that their inability to compete makes their situation more difficult vis a vis players.

"Liverpool are not in a good position. They've lost Gerrard now, Sturridge has been out for most of the season, Sterling wants to go. I don't think Liverpool have the resources to match the big clubs. It's not the most attractive club at the moment," he said, highlighting the spending disparity between the Reds and their rivals.

"They're a great club and they have been a great club over the years. But they're not a great team at the moment. I think that's why Sterling wants to leave and get away to play Champions League football and I don't think it looks healthy for Liverpool next year in relation to the other top teams."

John also feels the blame does not lie with Sterling when it comes to the impasse.

"I don't think Sterling's done that much wrong. He's entitled to do what he wants. He doesn't have to extend his contract and he's got two years to run on it. I think he was put under a fair bit of pressure by Liverpool," said John.
