This week a certain John Egan's right foot powered him into the minds of Irish football fans.

The Southend defender, who is on loan from Sunderland, scored an incredible goal (which you can watch here) against League Two rivals Scunthorpe.

An Ireland U21 international, Egan is the son of late Kerry GAA legend John Egan, and the 21-year-old also features on Setanta Sports TV series Football Scholars which follows the stories of Irish soccer hopefuls in the UK.

Tonight he joined us on the show to chat to Ger about that goal and his career thus far.

"The show started filming around the time I got injured and captured all of it," said John of his early difficulties which included a broken leg while on a successful loan at Bradford City.

"It was a tough few months with all the rehab. The show centres around a lot of the young lads going over and making a name for themselves in England. [Watching it back] brought sore memories but it also got me upbeat because it showed me what I got back from. It's been a long road but I'm back playing football again."

Not just playing football, though, if you take that barnstorming goal into account.

"I came down to Southend a week and a half a week ago for a month-long loan and it's a great opportunity to build my fitness. The other night I just did a volley from about 30 yards and it flew in. It was a great feeling and a great buzz to get the team back into the game as well and all of a sudden it's all over my Facebook and the Internet," said John, who also explained the importance of his family and the massive influence his famous father played in his life and career.
