The €2,000 fine handed down to Longford club Dromard by the GAA has been one of the most controversial stories to happen to the association in 2016.

Dromard were given the fine for hosting a Jamie Carragher Soccer School in their club grounds last summer. The fine was originally set to be €3,000 before being lowered on appeal.

Tuesday morning's Irish Independent claims that Carragher may be set to pay the fine on behalf of the club. The newspaper claims that the former Liverpool defender is being "updated regularly on developments and with the appeal route now exhausted, his school may be prepared to help out with the fine".

The Longford club were alleged to have broken Rule 5.1, which states that; "All property including grounds, Club Houses, Halls, Dressing Rooms and Handball Alleys owned or controlled by units of the Association shall be used only for the purpose of or in connection with the playing of the Games controlled by the Association, and for such other purposes not in conflict with the Aims and Objects of the Association, that may be sanctioned from time to time by the Central Council."
