Chief sports writer for the Irish Daly Star Keiran Cunningham and deputy editor of the 42.ie Niall Kelly joined this afternoon’s Sunday paper review on Off The Ball.

 The pair joined Joe Molly to discuss the major talking points from this week’s back pages. Martin O’Neill’s position as Ireland manager was the main talking point.

 The Irish manager has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League side Stoke City. The panel believe former Ireland managers have struggled to make an impact after managing the national side.

 “Liam Tuohy in 72, first of all. His first job was with the students of Trinity College Dublin. John Giles next job was with the Vancouver Whitecaps. Eoin Hand was with Al-Taawon in Saudia Arabia. Jack Charlton never managed again. Mick McCarthy went to Sunderland, bottom of the Premier League at the time. They went on to lose nine out of nine after he took over until the end of the season. Brian Kerr went to the Faroes. Staunton went to Darlington, struggling in League two, and sacked after five months. Trappatoni hasn't managed since. He’s been linked with everyone from Hungary to Ivory Coast.“

 Cunningham believes it’s not the best addition for a manager’s Curriculum Vitae.

He says says there is a lack of glamour jobs on offer to former Ireland managers. Admitting they may have to settle for less attractive positions.

 “It doesn’t seem to be the best thing to have on your CV,” said Cunningham.

 Cunningham believes the top clubs in the Premier League prefer a younger manager at the helm. He says older managers tend to be given the jobs with smaller clubs because of their experience.

 “The Klopp’s, the Pochettino’s, the Guardiolo’s; they are younger men. O’Neill now, I think those jobs have been blocked off for him. You’re looking at the level of a Stoke City."
