French rugby outlet Le Rugbynistere says Scotland international Grant Gilchrist is the player earmarked to fill the void left by Paul O'Connell at Toulon.

Ex-Ireland captain O'Connell signed for the three-time European champions after leaving Munster last season but an injury sustained at the Rugby World Cup eventually forced the legendary lock to retire from rugby this month.

Le Rugbynistere says Edinburgh and Scotland second row Grant Gilchrist is being targeted by Toulon as a new signing.

The 25-year-old has 12 caps for Scotland, although he is currently injured.

But Le Rugbynistere concedes that there is no confirmation of a move to Toulon being in the offing.
