The Irish athletes competing in Moscow have endured a tough opening day, with each of today’s competitors failing to advance in their respective events.

Maria McCambridge failed to complete the women’s marathon, pulling out after approximately 8 km.

In the 800m heats both Mark English and Paul Robinson failed to get beyond the first stage, while Jennifer Carey finished her 400 metres heat in fifth place.
