Ireland have been knocked out of the Women's Rugby World Cup after a 40 - 7 loss to England at the semi-final stage.

The defeat brings an end to the Irish team's impressive journey to the last-four.

Philip Doyle's side had gone into the game as underdogs but took the lead after a bright start to the game.

They were awarded a try after 18 minutes that was eventually credited to scrum-half Tania Rosser after the referee consulted the Television Match Official.

IRB Player of the Year nominee Niamh Briggs converted from the touchline to give Ireland a 7 - 0 lead.

But England dominated the rest of the game with tries from Michelle Clark, Kat Merchant, Kay Wilson and two from Marley Packer helped them to book their place in Sunday's final against either France or Canada.
