Ireland's field hockey team are out of Rio 2016 after a 3-2 defeat to Argentina.

The Irish team had to win to progress out of Group B but despite a battling display, Argentina had too much.

The South Americans took the lead in the first quarter through Saladino, putting Ireland under immense pressure with a particularly effective high pressing game which made it hard for Craig Fulton's side to come out.

Goalkeeper David Harte was fundamental in keeping Ireland in touch.

They fought back with John Jermyn leveling from a penalty corner but Argentina then retook the lead.

Ireland showed more resilience as Shane O'Donoghue's penalty corner made it 2-2.

But the scorer of Argentina's second, Gonzalo Peillat, added a third for Argentina as Ireland's involvement in Rio came to a close with one win and four defeats in the group.

They finish fifth from the six teams, ahead of Canada who they beat on Thursday.
