As Ireland managed a 2-2 draw against Serbia, Wales and Austria started off their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaigns with wins.

Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales took early charge of the group after a 4-0 win over Moldova in Cardiff with Gareth Bale scoring twice to become the second highest goalscorer in Welsh history.

Sam Vokes and Joe Allen scored the two opening Welsh goals in the first half.

Earlier, Austria held off a second-half fight-back to claim a 2-1 win against their hosts Georgia.

Goals from Martin Hinteregger and Marc Janko had Austria 2-0 up, before Jano Ananidze pulled one back 12 minutes from time.

Wales and Austria are now on three points, with Ireland and Serbia on one point each.
