Ireland have won the 6 Nations championship with a dramatic, tense 22-20 win over France in the Stade de France.
A last minute try for the hosts was wiped out by the video referee who adjudged, correctly, that the final pass before the score had been forward.
The game was a bruising, tense encounter that saw both sides enjoy good spells and scramble on their respective goal-lines.
Jonathan Sexton scored two tries for Ireland but his kicking was wayward, missing a penalty and a conversion in the first half. The Racing Metro kicker was stretchered off the field in the second half following a shuddering hit from Mathieu Bastareaud.
Andrew Trimble got Ireland’s other try and it was just one highlight in an excellent display from the Ulster winger. Rob Kearney impressed alongside Trimble, repeatedly saving Ireland at the last moment from breakaway French attacks.
Dulin and Szarzewski score tries for France, with Machenaud kicking 10 points.
Jean-Marc Doussain missed a late penalty and the video referee ruled out an even later French try for a forward pass. Ireland then lost the ball with their final scrum of the game but a penalty with the clock in the red was the sweet relief Joe Schmidt’s side had battled so hard for.
