Everton and Ireland Under-21 striker Sam Byrne has broken his leg in a "freak" accident.
The 20-year-old Dubliner's season may be in jeopardy after suffering the leg-break on Thursday. He has already had surgery on the leg as the recovery process begins.
Former Everton defender David Unsworth is the club's Under-21 manager. He spoke to the Liverpool Echo about Byrne's injury.
"The boys are all gutted for Sam because they are a close group and he’s a popular member of the squad. We will give him all the support he needs and I look forward to having him back amongst us as soon as possible."
Byrne began his career in Manchester United's youth setup. He failed to play for the first team, but a loan spell with Carlisle United gave the Dubliner his first taste of senior football. He joined Everton in 2014.
The Dubliner has played twice for Ireland's Under-21's team, making his debut in 2014.
