Ireland suffered a shock defeat to Papua New Guinea this afternoon in a World Twenty20 Qualifier in Stormont.

John Bracewell's side batted first but could only reach 123/9 in their 20 overs with captain William Porterfield top scoring with 57 runs. Along with the captain only Gary Wilson and Alex Cusack reached double figures. At one stage Ireland were 33/4 inside 8 overs before Porterfield's innings helped raise a modest target.

Despite a wobble, Papua New Guinea were always in control in their run chase and won the game with seven balls remaining. Assad Vala top scored for the Papua New Guinean's scoring 32 runs. Tail-ender Norman Vanua brought the team home scoring 28 runs.

Despite the loss, Ireland remain on course to reach next years ICC World Twenty20 in India. They are still top of Pool A after four games in the qualifying tournament. The winner of each pool after six games qualifies.
