Ireland's squad have been given the day off, three days before their opening Euro 2016 game against Sweden.

The decision was only made public on Friday morning, with training planned to return to normal on Saturday morning. The Irish squad arrived in France on Wednesday evening and had their first full training session on Thursday on front of a local crowd.

After Thursday' training session, the team were kept busy with media commitments. That included recording their walk-ons for pre-match television coverage.

The Irish Independent have revealed that the FAI's decision to cancel training and media commitments may come back to haunt the team later in the tournament. All 24 teams are only allowed one day during the tournament, without speaking to the media.

The FAI are seeking to clarify if the team have already used their free day, despite having not played a match yet in France.
