UEFA are expected to approve the creation of a new international competition called the Nations League.
Delegates from the European governing body have been meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan with a vote to take place tomorrow.
The new format is set to replace international friendlies in odd numbered years from the 2018/19 season.
The 54 UEFA members would be divided into separate tiers with a four-team final tournament proposed to cap it off in the summer. Promotion and relegation would be a facet of the new proposals.
Ireland would be likely to end up in the second tier of teams based on their current ranking among UEFA Nations.
