Ireland played Bermuda tonight in a match which would determine the winner of the Yellow Division in the group phase of the FIL World Lacrosse Championships. Both teams came into the match unbeaten, and the stakes were high as the winner would go on to play for a chance at making the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The game started with a win for Bermuda at the face-off followed by a long possession, with Bermuda then going man-up on a foul by Ireland. The Irish team succeeded in killing that penalty, and then shortly thereafter, Bermuda would go man-down.
This set the tone for the rest of the game - the match was not characterised by particularly rough play, but it was clear the referees were going to call this one by the book. In the end, there was a combined 23 minutes total of penalty minutes for both teams - an extremely high figure. The standout performer for Bermuda was Drew Jenkins, who was dominant at the face-off and scored a few of their goals.
But Ireland were equal to the task - both Quinn and Sweeney (the goalies played a half each) came up with big saves at critical moments, Gibson did a fantastic job of shutting down Jenkins at every opportunity, and Ireland had its own answer on the goal-scoring front as Brian Gillis had a breakout game, scoring 6 goals and dishing out one assist, earning his The Physio Company Game MVP.
Kris Prior also made a major contribution with 3 goals and 1 assist, Tom Burke chipped in with 2 goals and 4 assists, Mike McTernan had 2 goals and Tom Riley had 5 assists. Ireland now face Israel at 6.30pm Irish time on Monday in a crucial match as Israel will provide a much stiffer test than any of the teams Ireland has faced thus far.
