Rugby's world governing body, the International Rugby Board (IRB), have insisted that it will not support any cross border competitions that are not approved by the Unions of the clubs.
The decision by the IRB to re-affirm it is position is being seen as a boost to the chances of the Heineken Cup continuing to operate after the end of this season.
The continuation of the ERC-led tournament is being backed by the Unions of Ireland, France, Wales, Scotland and Italy.
In a statement the IRB said: "In the interests of the global Game, the IRB reaffirms that it will not support any cross border competitions that are not approved by the Unions of any participating clubs, Rugby bodies and host countries in full accordance with IRB Regulations and Bye-Laws."
