For the first time in three years, Rory McIlroy did not make the cut at a major championship when he crashed out of the US Open yesterday.

It was an error strewn campaign for McIlroy in which he carded a 71 in the second round.

This is the first time he did not make the cut at a major championship since the 2013 British Masters.

McIlroy completed his weather-delayed first round on Friday with bogeys on his last three holes to finish the day on seven over par, equalling his worst score in the US Open which provided his first major win five years ago.

He birdied the 10th, 12th, 14th and 16th on day three and then drove the green on the short par-four 17th, only to three-putt for par from 80 feet.

But the world number three is looking to park that dismal campaign and began his recovery today by celebrating Father's Day with his Dad, Gerry.
