FAI Chief Executive John Delaney says Ireland hosting Euro 2020 finals games is huge for the country.

Dublin's Aviva stadium was today confirmed as the host of four matches during the tournament with the Irish economy expected to benefit.

But Delaney, speaking to Newstalk Lunchtime, also pointed towards the potential consequences should the Irish national team qualify.

"If we qualify for Euro 2020, two of our home games will be at the Aviva. There are kids in Ireland today who could be playing in those matches," said Delaney.

"It's the biggest field sports event that has ever been brought to our country."

Martin O'Neill's Ireland are currently aiming to qualify for Euro 2016 which will take place in France. That tournament will be the first of an expanded 24-team competition.

Under Giovanni Trapattoni, Ireland qualified for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine when the competition was still run in a 16-team format. That was the Boys in Green's first European Championship appearances since 1988 in Germany.
