Once you get out of your first round group, anything could happen.

That's the attitude Ireland will take with them to France for Euro 2016, with Sweden, Belgium and Italy forming the opposition in Group E.

Ahead of the tournament, the analytics department of data providers Gracenote Sports have simulated the tournament 10,000 times and it makes for relatively optimistic reading.

From an Irish perspective, they predict Martin O'Neill's team to finish third in Group E behind Belgium and Italy ... but significantly above Sweden.

According to their simulations, that is enough to make it to the last-16 where we would face a repeat of the 2002 World Cup second round by losing to European Championship holders Spain.

Of course, the tournament is unlikely to pan out like that but hopefully we do make it out of the group.
