Former Liverpool great Phil Thompson reckons if Phillipe Coutinho could improve his finishing, the Brazilian would be among the best players in the world.

The Sky Sports pundit spoke to Off The Ball following Liverpool’s 2-1 comeback win over 10-man Bolton in the FA Cup tonight, in which the Reds’ No10 scored a stunning stoppage-time winner following Raheem Sterling's equaliser to Eidur Gudjohnsen's penalty.

“The sending off changed it,” said Thompson of the victory, but he added: "I think [Liverpool] did deserve to win.”

“Coutinho’s unbelievable," the former Liverpool captain continued, "if he could finish better and more often, he would be world, world class.

“For [Raheem] Sterling, the ball from Emre Can was absolutely perfect,” added Thompson.

Asked if he thought Liverpool had turned a corner in there season, he added: “Absolutely. I think everybody would say that. That's why you see its very quiet in the transfer window, all the top teams are in decent form.

“Liverpool are going in the right direction. Everybody can feel it."

With Daniel Sturridge back in harness following a long injury lay-off, Thompson is upbeat Liverpool can make a charge for the Top Four. “We’ve got as much a chance as anyone else up there,” he said. “We, on form, are as good as any of them.

“We just need that cutting edge, which hopefully Daniel Sturridge will give them."
