Former Republic of Ireland captain Kenny Cunningham has told Off the Ball that he was surprised by the lack of transfer activity at Chelsea before the season got underway.

The Premier League champions' two main signings of the transfer window were Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic while the midfield and defence was not strengthened.

"I was surprised he didnt bring in a central midfielder", Cunningham told Off the Ball. He also added that he felt Cesc Fabregas failed to perform in the second half of the season, with Nemanja Matic having to cover for Fabregas' deficiencies. Morgan Schneiderlin was a player Cunningham thought Chelsea could have bought.

Cunningham also feels the potential signing of John Stones from Everton could be crucial as the partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill is "just creaking a little bit".

"They are just leaving themselves a little short" if those areas are not strengthened as Cunningham feels John Terry may be playing his final season at the top level.
