Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood was very vocal about his team's failings following Saturday's 4 - 0 defeat to Chelsea.

But John Giles told us that such honesty can be counter-productive.

"I felt sorry for him at the weekend. His team was awful and he was very honest in what he was saying. He was absolutely right and it was a weird interview. You could see the hurt in his eyes and he said what managers would like to say after a bad defeat but seldom say. I think he was very honest in what he was saying but very unwise," said John who believes Sherwood is "out of his depth" at White Hart Lane.

But John has sympathy for Sherwood who had no say in the make-up of the playing squad, although he worries that the 45-year-old's outspoken nature could put off prospective chairmen at other clubs. He thinks Sherwood "should resign now" so that his managerial career "won't be in ruins before it's even started."

John also looked ahead to the Manchester United v Liverpool match this Sunday. He agrees with Didi Hamann's assertion that Liverpool have no other way than to attack David Moyes' side. But he does not think there is a quick fix for Liverpool's leaky defence although he believes they are "capable of beating United."

He also rubbished the idea of the 'keeping it tight for a while' mentality during the early stages of a match.

"I never believed in that 'keep it tight for a while'. It's a myth to be honest. I've heard people say they've got to keep it tight for the first 15 minutes. What about the last 15 minutes? I remember Ireland going to play Israel and everyone was saying 'keep it tight for a while'. We scored after two minutes. You take the game on its merits. There's no harm in scoring in the first 15 minutes," said John.

He also gave his take on whether its better for Chelsea to have accumulated points or if Manchester City have an advantage by having more games in hand.
