The PGA Tour has received a huge boost ahead of this season's Players Championship at Sawgrass with the news that the end of season FedEx Cup has been extended until 2027.

The company has sponsored the four event play-off since 2007 which has seen a dramatic climax to the season as the Tours' top players battle it out for a winners cheque of $10 million.

The FedEx Cup's points system adds intrigue to every Tour event with the points accrued becoming more important as the season progresses.

Rory McIlroy claimed the title last year when he won both the Dell Technologies Championship and the Tour Championship within the space of a month to edge out Dustin Johnson to the top prize.

"The FedEx relationship has been invaluable to the PGA Tour on multiple fronts for more than 30 years, beginning with its sponsorship of the FedEx St. Jude Classic," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said.

"The FedExCup revolutionised the fan viewing experience and competitive landscape of the PGA TOUR, establishing a cohesive narrative throughout the schedule and a compelling conclusion to the season with the FedExCup Playoffs."

The play-offs culminate in a 30 player event at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta for the Tour Championship in September.
