Every Wednesday on The Right Hook, George is joined live in studio by Philip Molloy, presenter of Newstalk’s film and cinema programme The Picture Show. Philip leads George through this week’s new releases and breaking movie news, as well as taking in what’s worth a look on the small screen too.
Tune in live this evening at 6.25pm to hear Philip’s take on the new Keanu Reaves’ action movie John Wick, as well as news of Clint Eastwood’s next directorial venture, and how concussion is set to soon become a recurring motif in Hollywood cinema: http://www.newstalk.com/player/
As well as all of the above, this week, Philip was also greatly moved by a new biography of the stand-up comedian and actor, the all-American institution that was Bob Hope. Hope, written by TIME journalist Richard Zoglin, is a brilliant telling of the consummate performer’s life story, filling in all the details about the history of America across the 20th century.
Hope remains an icon of show business, renowned for his ability to reinvent himself before the concept of reinvention had ever really taken hold. While he may have passed away in 2003, after accruing a century in age and a knighthood along the way, his jokes are eternal. Here are 10 of the best of Bob Hope’s one-liners:
10: 'She said she was approaching forty, and I couldn't help wondering from what direction.'
9: "Dying is to be avoided because it can ruin your whole career."
8: "The last time I played golf with President Ford he hit a birdie - and an eagle, a moose, an elk, an aardvark ..."
7: "If you watch a game, it's fun. If you play it, it's recreation. If you work at it, it's golf."
6: "Zsa Zsa Gabor got married as a one-off and it was so successful she turned it into a series."
5: "I see the Beatles have arrived from England. They were 40 pounds overweight - and that was just their hair."
4: “Middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle."
3: "Eisenhower admitted that the budget can't be balanced and McCarthy said the communists are taking over. You don't know what to worry about these days - whether the country will be overthrown or overdrawn."
2: "If you haven't any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble."
1: "I do benefits for all religions. I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality."
