Despite the fact that there had been rumours about who exactly would be joining the second season of True Detective, last night we got a late confirmation on who was officially joining the cast.

Our own Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn were already confirmed for the series but they will now be joined by the wonderful Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly and Taylor Kitsch.

The press release from HBO reads as follows:

Nic Pizzolatto's drama series 'True Detective' is set to begin production of its second season this fall in California. The eight-episode season will focus on three police officers and a career criminal who navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder. The cast includes Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly.

Season 2 will star Colin Farrell as Ray Velcoro, "a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him." Vince Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, "a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner." Kelly Reilly will play Frank's wife, Jordan, "a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions."

Rachel McAdams will be Ani Bezzerides, "a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves." Taylor Kitsch's character will be Paul Woodrugh, "a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened."

The first two episodes will be directed by Justin Lin.

True Detective was a critical and commercial success for HBO, with the 8 part series quickly earning a cult following as the complex, Southern Gothic tale of two detectives hunting a killer had fans obsessed with figuring out the identity of the killer.

Critics raved about the script, acting and the directing, meaning expectations for the second season will be at the highest level.
