The contract might have had an expiry date of 2018, but perhaps the disappointing nature of this season for Borussia Dortmund means it should not be a surprise that Jurgen Klopp decided to announce his departure.

German football writer and author of Tor, Uli Hesse joined us on Off The Ball and he believes, like many people, that his countryman's next step will be towards England.

"For a variety of reasons, England seems the most likely destination sooner or later - but not necessarily in the summer," he said.

"He's been linked with Man City for quite some time. There was a rumour that he had a distinct offer for a lot of money from City last year and that Dortmund turned that down. There's a lot of people that think City is not the sort of club that would be high on Klopp's agenda."

Hesse believes Klopp will be aware that it will be hard to find the stability that eh enjoyed at Mainz and Dortmund, but that it will be something he will seek.

"I think he will try and find a club where he doesn't have to answer to too many people," said Hesse.

He also suggested that current Mainz manager Thomas Tuchel is the likely replacement for Klopp, despite misgivings from some of Dortmund's fans.
