JK Rowling has penned a 1,500 word short story detailing where Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger have ended up roughly 7 years in the future since the last published book.

In the tale, Harry is now a member of an elite unit of officers who apprehend Dark Wizards.

Hermione has risen to the position of Deputy Head of Magical Law Enforcement and shares two children with Ron Weasley who's "famous ginger hair appears to be thinning slightly."

The Pottermore story, however, is not merely just an update for Harry Potter fans.

The piece reads as a thinly veiled attack on the tabloid press, who Rowling infamously has a strong distaste for.

It is written in the style of a newspaper report by the gossip columnist Rita Skeeter from the Harry Potter series.

The Pottermore piece reads, "One always hesitates to invade the privacy of young people, but the fact is that anyone closely connected with Harry Potter reaps the benefits and must pay the penalty of public interest."

The bitchy tone continues throughout the piece and the clear invasion of privacy of the trio and the constant insults regarding their appearance represent how cruel the tabloid press can be.

Rowling is not a fan of the press and in 2011 appeared before the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics to claim that a reporter had once tried to contact her by leaving a note in her 5-year-old daughter's schoolbag.
