Padraig Harrington and Rory McIlroy are within touching distance of the lead after the first round at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.

Harrington posted a four-under first round of 66 to leave him three shots off the lead held by Jordan Spieth.

Starting on the back nine, the Dubliner posted four birdies in a flawless round to keep pace with the leading pack.

McIlroy rebounded from missing the cut at the US Open last weekend with a three-under round of 67.

Despite posting four birdies, the Northern Irishman was disappointed with his score and felt he left some strokes out on the course.

Speaking about his round afterwards, the four time major winner said: "If we were able to flip-flop these tournaments and this would have been the first week and the US Open the second - I probably would have been a bit more comfortable.

"It's nice out there. It's a really great golf course. You can give yourself plenty of chances. Jeez, I only made four birdies today but it felt like I could have made eight or nine."

Jordan Spieth leads the way after posted a seven-under round of 63 while Seamus Power carded a two-over round of 72.
