Bayern Munich have announced that Pep Guardiola is to become the club’s new manager from July of this year.

The German club announced the new managerial appointment via their Twitter account.

Guardiola, a two time Champions League winning coach with Barcelona, will join Bayern on a three year deal.

He will replace current coach Jupp Heynckes, who will retire at the end of the season, aged 71.

Guardiola had spent 4 years as head coach of Barcelona before leaving the club at the end of last season. Since then he has been on a sabbatical from football, living in New York while the football press speculated about his future.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea were all believed to have been attempting to hire Guardiola. The appointment of Rafa Benitez as Chelsea "interim manager" was a move by club chairman Roman Abramovich to ensure there was a managerial vacancy at Stamford Bridge to accommodate Guardiola.
