George Groves' Irish trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick has branded the referee as "unprofessional" after the controversial World super-middleweight title fight against Carl Froch.

Referee Howard Foster stopped the fight in the ninth round seemingly to protect Groves which handed the victory to Froch.

But up to that point Groves had been on course to cause an upset and may be in line for a rematch.

But Fitzpatrick was still feeling angry when he spoke to Off The Ball tonight and he was especially furious with the conduct of the referee who he described as "unprofessional" and spoke of a Facebook message which allegedly involved the referee prior to the match.

"The initial reaction when I saw him step in was nothing because he had stepped in before to pull them apart. It only made sense when he got him into a headlock and then it clicked," said Fitzpatrick who was unhappy with the referee's explanation:

"I asked him why he stopped it and he wouldn't answer me at first. I was raising my voice and he said George was hurt. So I was asked him why he didn't stop the other times when Froch was hurting and I said 'you believed what the crowd said and we spoke about this in the rules meeting and in my dressing room'. He paid me no damn attention. He bought into the hype that Carl Froch is a warrior and he bought into the belief that George Grove was chinny just because Froch said it.

"And I believe that his conduct was very unprofessional because he had a Facebook page and somebody who knew him saw him at the weigh in and sent him a Facebook message saying 'I fancy Carl Froch in the ninth' and he 'liked' it. He was a professional referee taking part in the biggest boxing match of the year and he's been unprofessional at the very least!"

He also felt that Groves was still trading blows when Foster stepped in.

"At the end of round 7, George had gone onto the back foot and I told him 'you've gone onto the back foot but [Froch] does not realize you've moved so he's going to think that he's starting to back you up'. He said he was feeling great. He was fine and there was nothing wrong. Course he was tired but so was Carl Froch.

"When Foster's name came up it was a concern to me because in the past Foster been a competent, world class referee and he's also proved himself to jump in and make very erratic decisions. This is happening a bit regularly for Mr Foster."
