Grainne Walsh has booked her place in the Women's World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan, after a tough battle against Polish fighter Hanna Soleckah.

The Tullamore welterweight recovered after a shaky start in the opening round to ultimately claim the victory via unanimous decision. Her advance to the quarter-finals compliments the performances of Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington, who both prevailed in their bouts.

Victory against Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khalzova on Tuesday would secure a bronze medal and ensure that she will become the second Irish woman after Katie Taylor, to win a world championship medal.

The Bray fighter is just two wins away from Rio and will re-enter the ring tomorrow, where she will face Dayana Sanchez of Argentina.

She cruised to victory yesterday against Sweden's Agnes Alexiusson on a scorecard of 40-36, 40-36, 39-37.
