Shay Given has announced he will leave Aston Villa. The former Republic of Ireland international will leave the club as he seeks to secure first team football.

The 37 year old has one year left on his contract at Villa Park but did not regularly figure in the first team plans last season, falling behind Brad Guzan in the pecking order for the number 1 spot.

The Herald reports Given as saying, "Last night I had a meeting with manager Paul Lambert and we both agreed that I should be playing first-team football.

"And that's not happening at Villa right now."
