Profile

A graduate of the Right To Dream academy founded by former Man United scout Tm Vernon, Waris first gained attention at Swedish side BK Hacken.

Having joined the club in 2009, the pacey forward’s breakout season came in the 2012 season when he scored an astonishing 23 goals in 29 league games. That May he would score five goals in a single game as BK Hacken thrashed IFK Norrkoping 6 – 0. He would score another hat-trick before the end of that season. His stellar form would earn him the Swedish Player of the Year crown.

At the end of 2012, he would move to Russian side Spartak Moscow. Used sparingly by the Russian Premier League side, Waris went on loan to French minnows Valenciennes where the 22-year-old has plundered nine goals and five assists in 15 Ligue 1 games.

Key Stats

Waris’ shot accuracy is very impressive for Valenciennes this season. According to Squawka, his shot accuracy is over 60 per cent, while goals to shot conversion rate is a very impressive 28 per cent.
Predominantly right footed, eight of his nine league goals have come from that appendage.

 

This summer

When Newstalk’sTeam 33 spoke to Tom Vernon, he said that Waris is likely to start alongside Ghana’s main striker Asamoah Gyan in Brazil.
