Steven Gerrard says he would have chosen to stay at Liverpool if the club had offered him a new contract last summer.

A potential new deal was not mentioned until November, by which time the captain was finding his playing time more limited than in the past.

The 34-year-old leave Anfield at the end of the season, bringing to an end a 17-year professional career at the club.

"If a contract had been put in front of me in pre-season I would have signed it," Gerrard told The Liverpool Echo.

He has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy.
