Germany and Turkey are the two final bidders left in the battle to host the 2024 UEFA European Football Championships.

Plans for a combined Nordic bid from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden have been dropped, with the president of the Swedish FA Karl-Erik Nilsson telling The Associated Press that they didn't have enough stadiums to host the tournament.

The deadline to enter the running is today.

Germany last hosted a major football tournament in 2006 when they held the World Cup. It was the second time they hosted the World Cup, having done so as West Germany in 1974 when they went on to beat Netherlands in the final.

West Germany has hosted the European Championships on just one occasion, back in 1988, although they are three time winners.

Turkey has yet to host a major football tournament, having lost out to France in the bidding process for Euro 2016.

The country did host the 2013 FIFA under-20 World Cup however.

Euro 2020 is the next championship to be held but it will be hosted in a pan-European format across 13 cities including Dublin.

The Aviva Stadium will host some group games as well as a last-16 tie.

Wembley Stadium in London will host the semi finals and final in 2020.
